Even the darkest secrets can’t stay buried forever…
Five figures gather round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood …
Years later, a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders which shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children’s home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. D.I. Kim Stone fast realises she’s on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it’s too late?

Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction.

Silent Scream, the first book in the Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons is one killer of a read! This series has been on my TBR for quite some time now and when a group of readers/bloggers decided to do a buddy read for the series, I jumped at the chance to join in and I am so glad that I did. Silent Scream really sets the bar high right from the word go and I know this series is just going to get better and better with each book read.

When a headmistress is found murdered in her home, it sets of a chain of events centered around Crestwood, a former home for unwanted children. What happened years ago at Crestwood and why is someone trying to silence the truth from getting out? DI Kim Stone and her team are on the case ready to expose the truth. But, when human remains are found in the ground at Crestwood, the case takes a turn and it has now become personal for Kim. With the body count rising, it does not look like the case will ever be solved. Will Kim and her team find the answers and the culprit in time to prevent any more deaths from occurring?

I can not express just how much I loved, loved loved this book! The opening scene just grips you right from the start and Marsons just sucks you right in with her descriptive writing and vivid imagination. The story has so many twists and turns as the truth slowly starts to reveal itself. I found myself flipping through the pages needing to know what happens next. There are quite a few people I pegged as the killer, but I still could not figure out for certain who was actually behind it all until the final reveal and still another twist is thrown in that absolutely blew me away.

Kim Stone is definitely one of my favorite characters from any book. She is hard nose detective that doesn’t necessarily play well with others. She is blunt and gets straight to the point. There is no hand holding as far as she is concerned. Kim also does not play by the rules and will go to any length necessary to reach her end goal – stopping a sadistic killer. As we get to know Kim and her personal history, you can see why she is the way she is. She has a tragic past that has shaped the woman she is today. Although Kim is relentless in her pursuit of the truth, she does indeed have a soft side and you can see this with how she interacts with her team, especially with Bryant, the closest she has to a friend. Marsons injects these random acts of kindness and vulnerability into Kim which makes her so relatable and loveable. I am really looking forward to learning more about Kim and her life as I go deeper into the series.

Silent Scream blends an intense and twisting thriller full of secrets and lies at every turn. Marsons will lead you deep into a maze as you navigate your way to the final gratifying conclusion. Just be aware that once you finish this book you will quickly be running to your nearest bookstore to buy the rest of this series. Five stars all the way!
