A calculating cold-blooded predator closes in…

When a community has barely recovered from a ruthless serial killer six months earlier; now two more horrifying murders hit the radar again. It leaves police burdened with two of the most shockingly contaminated crime scenes ever documented in California’s law enforcement history. The Slayer works behind the scenes as a sinister puppet master, precisely pulling the strings, taunting the police without leaving any viable evidence, and orchestrating his killer hit squads.

The sheriff and district attorney bring in the best investigators. Reunited again, Dr. Chip Palmer, a reclusive forensic expert, joins DA Inspector Kate Rawlins to sort through the crime scene aftermath in search of the truth—all without a probable suspect or a solid motive. Complicating the investigation—sparks reignite between the two.

Ratcheting up the suspense, Chip suffers a nasty fall hitting his head, impairing his perception and giving him a mind-blowing ability for specific detailed recall. Palmer and Rawlins assemble an unusual team including a rookie detective, a forensic supervisor, and an ex-military operative turned bodyguard. After one of their own is kidnapped and the investigation is taken over by the FBI, the now rogue team must pull together their own resources—alone—with a killer waiting to take each one of them out. Scene of the Crime takes no prisoners and leaves everyone fighting to stay alive.

My Review:

DA Inspector Kate Rawlins is on the case of the latest homicide and the mystery surrounding this murder has the local police force stumped. The crime scene is unusual and nothing about it makes any sense. The only person who could make any sense out of the crime scene is Alexander “Chip” Palmer a local criminalist and profiler. Kate and Chip have a history together and it is a little awkward at first when they are partnered together after not seeing each other for the past six months. But, together they try to piece together the latest scene to try to catch a killer. Only, the killer now has Kate and Chip in his sights. With their lives on the line, will the killer capture them first?

Scene of the Crime is the first book I have read from Jennifer Chase. Although this story can be read as a stand alone, I felt as if I was missing a piece between Kate and Chip since they were in a previous book. In no way did it take away my enjoyment from reading, though. The mystery surrounding the crime scene is really well done and kept me guessing all the way through the story. Jennifer Chase throws out a lot of red herrings and I went back and forth quite a few times trying to figure out who The Slayer was. When the final reveal came, I was pretty much in shock.

I loved both kate and Chip. Kate is a strong woman in both demeanor and attitude. She is a no nonsense Inspector and commands respect from her peers. But, you can see the uncertainty she has when it comes to Chip. She has feelings for him even though he is not the “normal” type of man she usually dates. Chip is a phenomenon all on his own. He is a genius criminologist and profiler suffering from his own encounter with a killer six months prior. He is trying to rebuild his life when he is asked to profile a new crime scene which puts him back with Kate. During their investigation, Chip takes a nasty fall. The fall seems to rewire his brain somehow to the point where he can recollect every single detail of the crime scene, even things he missed prior to his fall. Chip is a huge asset to the team and really leads the investigation along to its final conclusion.

Scene of the Crime by Jennifer Chase is a gripping, fast paced mystery and thriller that blends a highly charged murder investigation with a budding romance between the two main characters. I found myself glued to the pages half in part to the mystery and half in part to Kate and Chip’s story. If you love an intriguing storyline shrouded in mystery and suspense, then you do not want to miss this story. I will definitely be checking out the previous book, Body of the Crime, which is where Chip and Kate meet for the first time on another case.
