The Gathering

The Uprising Series tells the story of three freedom fighters and their friends in high — and low — places that come together to overthrow a vainglorious Emperor and his militaristic Cabal to restore the city, and the way of life, they once knew and loved. In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought.

My Review:

The Gathering is the the first book in the Uprising series. It is a new Dystopian series set way in the future of New York City. Rock N’ Roll plays a huge part and takes center stage and reminds me of the times back in the 80’s when Glam Metal was the “it” music..bands such as Guns N Roses, AC/DC and the like. This was a time were drugs and debauchery ran rampant in the city.

James Randall Ryan IV, also known as Jamie to his friends, was a glam rock god during the time when Rock N’ Roll music was popular. His band Faust, were legends in the industry, but even with their status, they fell to the drug scene prevalent to their occupation. New York City was their home and held a special place in their hearts. But, their city slowly started to change. Shortly after the last President left office, corruption ensued, the government became compromised, and a new leader rose to the top.

Roger Cunningham rose to power and became the new Emperor of New York City. Here he stripped every right of his citizens and ruled with an iron fist. He had his own group of loyal soldiers, the Cabal, who practiced Psi on the citizens of New York, turning them into walking zombies if they ever defied the rules set forth by the Emperor. He demanded docility of all of his subjects and any non conformers were met with the Psi.

Not everyone in New York agrees the the Emperor. Jamie certainly didn’t and neither did his two comrades Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura. Once a member of the Cabal, Jamie has always hated everything the Emperor stood for. Along with other freedom fighters and a blast from his past, they are all intent on an Uprising to finally rid their city of a corrupt Emperor and restore the old New York City to its former glory days.

I really loved how Rock N’ Roll plays such a big role in this story because I used to love Glam bands back in the 80’s. I had Bon Jovi hair, wore band t-shirts, and rocked out to bands such as Poison, Guns N’ Roses, and Great White. So, this part of the story really drew me right in. The plot centers around the Uprising and overthrowing the Emperor. We meet all of the key players and groups that are paramount to the story. Although we only touch on the beginning of the story, I feel it was necessary to get a good grasp on how the series will go from here on out.

As I got farther into the story, some of the plot became a bit too preachy mirroring our own political climate and things that are going on in our own Presidency and how people are also “uprising” against things the President stands for. There is also a lot of white privilege and the cleansing of ethnicity that is prevalent in this story. Again, mirroring what has been going on in our world today. I was not a big fan of this part, but I can see why it was necessary in the story. Although there will be a lot of readers who will agree with it, there will also be readers who don’t. It is a very sticky slope, but also quite courageous on the author’s part and a bold move.

The Gathering is a Dystopian story that is in part fiction and yet eerily similar to our current state of affairs. It is a bold story that seems far too real. This is a perfect start to a series that just touches on society and our current affairs set in a Dystopian world.
