Lucy is a small town girl with a big-time break from reality. For years Lucy lived an empty life as a mall worker, but when she turned to social media to fill her lonely aches, trouble began.

The Crazy One follows Lucy on her quest to infiltrate the life of B-list celebrity Joel Ruskin no matter the cost. From Omaha, to a secluded Colorado farmhouse, to prison; nothing will stop Lucy from turning her obsession to possession. Not even Joel’s pesky new girlfriend can get in her way. The power of Lucy’s mind is unstoppable as she resolves to finally make herself Joel’s reality and exterminate the other woman.

Lucy Bonneville is a small town Nebraskan girl with big dreams. She is having a passionate love affair with her boyfriend, rock star Beau Castle. Although, she thinks he is the one for her, it some becomes apparent that she isn’t cut out to be a famous star’s girlfriend. While at a party one night, she meets Joel Ruskin. He is a television personality and sort of famous, but he is very down to earth and he easily sweeps Lucy off of her feet and they have this whirlwind love affair. Lucy knows he is the perfect man for her. Unfortunately for Lucy, Joel has no idea who she is and well neither does Beau for that matter and said party never even existed. Lucy is living in her own little fantasy world, one she plans on making real and nothing will stand in her way. From her home in Nebraska to the mountains of Colorado, Lucy is determined to make all of her dreams come true.

Lucy is a character you can easily feel sorry for. She is rather plain, short and plump. She didn’t have the best home life growing up and she has always been socially awkward. On top of that, she is obsessively compulsive and her grip on reality is virtually nonexistent. She is not a girl people notice and she kind of fades in the background wherever she goes. So it is no wonder why she has the thoughts that she has. I think in the beginning its an escape for her, but things slowly take a turn and you can see Lucy spiraling out of control.

While reading The Crazy one it really kind of hit home for me because twenty something years ago I also had a random stalker and it got so bad that I couldn’t even leave my home without someone with me. Stalking doesn’t just happen to celebrities. It can happen to ordinary everyday people. It is scary to think that some people, much like Lucy, can become so obsessive and delusional in their pursuit. It is frightening and creepy.

Rebecca Markus really takes us down a twisted path that blurs the lines of fantasy and reality and really makes you question where the line gets drawn between being a fan and becoming a stalker. The Crazy One is intense and takes the creep factor to a whole new level. Even I was a little freaked out. If you enjoy a psychological thriller that at times can mirror real life then I highly suggest you pick up a copy of The Crazy One and immerse yourself in the fantasy world of Lucy as she journeys past the point of no return.
